Steytlerville Pegasus

Early Motoring Museum

Motoring museum puts dorpie on the map

STEYTLERVILLE itself is a bit of a surprise. It’s clean, it’s neat, but really it’s a one horse town on the way, I am sure, to somewhere. But there is something that sets Steytlerville aside from those Karoo dorpies that offer travellers sustenance, and that’s the Pegasus Early Motoring  Museum  which is a real boys’ (and some girls’) paradise.

Tucked away behind the Verandah Coffee Shop where ladies might lunch on the stoep on a hot summer’s day, or inside when the Karoo chills set in, this motor museum  is a respite in the wilderness for anyone who has any interest whatsoever in the history of the motor car.

First off there’s impeccably restored – and still being restored – cars with a varying degree of scarcity. There’s a 1964 Ford Fairlane 500 which is still in perfect running order and a being restored from scrap 1955 Willy’s Overland.

But the rarest is the Ford Model C which is one of only two of the vehicles in the country. Built during the 1930’s, this car is being lovingly restored by museum owners Michele and Jurie Prinsloo to its original condition – including the restoration of its floor and ceiling wood.

Then there’s the original 1967 Ford Corsair GT, with its original chrome trimmings and, coming soon, especially for the sports enthusiast, a Ford GT 40 which costs R1,2-million to build.

But, as they say in the adverts, that is not all. Every nook and cranny of this interesting museum is crammed full of motoring memorabilia, from books to model cars and an old diagnostic machine which preceded today’s computerised testers.

Added to this, it’s an animal’s paradise where the kids can while away a half hour playing with the Prinsloo’s many pets, and you have the perfect stopover for the whole family.

A small entry to the museum will definitely keep the boys entertained while mom enjoys coffee and cake and the kids get to stretch their legs and play with the animals, making  this a must do stopover for anyone visiting or passing through Steytlerville.
